Woods, Dulverton, Somerset (free house)
A great pub should offer good beer and good food. Not all do. Here in the Exmoor town of Dulverton, landlord Paddy Groves manages to do both. At Woods, Groves has effectively buried the notion that a gastro-pub has to be a santised former pub where you’re asked ‘are you eating?’ as soon as you come through the door. Inside the interior is comfortably rural, split between the bar and restaurant, though the two sides don’t feel too separate. There are three real ales, dispensed straight from casks which are kept in a temperature-cooled room behind the bar. Exmoor Ale is the session ale, while beers such as St Austell’s Proper Job IPA, HSD and Tribute, O’Hanlon’s Yellowhammer and Royal Oak and Otter’s stupendous strong ale Head are regular features. The bar staff are friendly (especially the singing barman!), the food is excellent and the beer always well-kept. Oenophiles are also exceptionally well-catered for.
